Co−President’s Message

What is it all about? Some days with the rhetoric of our media bombarding me, I lose my perspective regarding the benefit of our League to our country and to democracy in general. Do you? While articulating when no one seems to be listening to my personal beliefs it is still important that we get back to the basics of America as a democracy, for all races and religions, the people, a dream that has been growing for nearly 240 years.

How do we work together to help our country evolve instead of tearing each other apart for having different values and beliefs? How do we as League facilitate civility to each other again and remember the reasons we became a country − a place where all people regardless of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, ancestry, disability that can be reasonably accommodated without undue hardship, sex, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital or veteran status, can live together in harmony? We have become so polarized politically that it seems we have stopped listening actively, critically and with compassion to each other. I have read recently our democracy described as a “veto−cracy”. Rhetoric today encourages people to try to intimidate others whenever others, who do not believe as they do, choose to exercise their right to register and/or cast their votes.

My male humming bird friend found the feeder last week − and then the female arrived five days later. What a treat to observe them and to know there will soon be little ones! Spring Renewal!

Come to our Annual Meeting, Saturday, May 17 at 9AM and bring a friend. Print the Annual Meeting agenda that Lou emailed you (online here). Please complete our member questionnaire. Our speaker is Kent Helwig, CEO of Southwest Memorial Hospital. Come and experience his energy and insight on the new Health Care Programs that might come to fruition! We are not expecting ESP from him, but he will be able to describe some of the options that might happen.

Thanks to all who participated with Teen Maze and helped to ensure the success of our booth. KUDOS to Terri Helm who coordinated the League booth − she was the heart and soul of our effort!

We will NOT be participating in the Friday, May 4 “White Elephant Sale” at St. Barnabas Church

There are articles in this newsletter on the Environment and on our website including fracking, which is getting more visibility nationally every day. Celebrate the new visibility and information and talk to others about it!

This is an exciting and very busy times for our Legislators as the assembly session winds down and finds that there is not as much time in a day for them to complete tasks. Follow progress on LWVCO site as well. Check the Colorado Assembly home page. http://www.leg.state.co.us/clics/clics2012A/cslFrontPages.nsf/HomeSplash?OpenForm

The Colorado League site has information for you, too, especially in the Legislative News Letters section. www.lwvcolorado.org
