Video and Audio Taping Policy
Draft Memo from Gerry Cummins, LWVCO Voter Service Chair
Due to the increasing capability of electronic devices in use, Leagues are being confronted
with unique situations that could affect our ability to retain our nonpartisan reputation. With the
intent and spirit of fairness to candidates and issue partisans in mind, the following guidelines
have been drafted. We ask Leagues to state the guidelines in a short and routine manner at
the beginning of all meetings to which the public has been invited. Do not discuss or debate the
guidelines.
Video and Audio Taping Policy
Guidelines for League-sponsored forums
Individuals must give advance notice that they intend to record the entire event and not
do it surreptitiously.
No disruptive behavior will be permitted.
Share materials immediately (photos, video/audio recordings) with local League and all
participants of the forum
Those taping a forum, debate, etc. may not take over the meeting with their activities.
They may not block any views of the audience of the event.
They should not be noisy or interfere with the event.
They should be reasonably discreet.
Leagues should consider taping (audio & video) the meeting to have their own recording
to verify accuracy.
Standard Opening Comments prior to start of forum:
“The League of Women Voters requests that anyone videotaping or photographing this forum (or
debate or _____) respect the need to preserve the context, or intent, of what is being said and
also the nonpartisanship of the League when using any taped material. As a matter of courtesy,
we further request that you not block any view of the audience or interfere with the event in any
way. Thank You!”
Gerry (gerry.cummins@prodigy.net) welcomes your comments on this important new policy for LVWCO and LWVMZC.
LWVCO Board will discuss this policy at the February 6 meeting in Denver.
