LWVCO Fracking StudyFracing Study Purpose: to investigate the impact on the State of Colorado and its citizens of the practice of Hydrofracking for nation gas, oil and methane and to discuss what public policies are in place or need to be in place for this activity. The Study Group meets regularly by conference call and has identified questions and issues to answer that will be incorporated in the study’s white paper topics and consensus questions. The Colorado Legislature will introduce a bill in February or March to clarify and to provide for more local control. Read the LWVCO Legislature Newsletters for timely information on fracking bills. LaPlata League of Women Voters is meeting to view and discuss The Colorado State of Mind TV program on Fracking. A panel including the SW Region Environmental Specialist from COGCC and a representative of EarthWorks oil and gas accountability project based in Durango will follow the viewing. The meeting is open to the public. FracFocus.org is the national hydraulic fracturing chemical registry. The Ground Water Protection Council and interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, two organizations whose missions both revolve around conservation and environmental protection, manage Fracfocus. The website was created to provide the public access to reported chemicals used for hydraulic fracturing within their area. To help users put this information into perspective the site also provides objective information on hydraulic fracturing, the chemicals used, the purposes and the means by which groundwater is protected. The primary purpose of this site is to provide information concerning hydraulic fracturing and groundwater protection. It is not interested to argue either for or against the use of fracturing as a technology. It is not intended to provide a scientific analysis of risk associate with fracturing. This site doesn’t deal with issues unrelated to chemical use in fracturing such as naturally occurring radioactive material. —Jodi Foran |
