Candidate Forum Criteria

Criteria for whether or not a candidate is included in a candidate forum:

The LWVCO Education Fund adopted the following criteria (as outlined in the Voter Service Handbook, May 2006 edition, Candidate Forums, p. 7) for use as a guideline to determine which candidates will be invited to participate in candidate debates and forums:

  • “Ballot access: The candidate must meet all state elections requirements to be on the ballot.
  • Constitutional Eligibility: The candidate, if elected, must be legally qualified to hold the office under federal and state laws.
  • Significance of Candidate: The candidate must show voter interest and support which can be assessed by considering a number of factors, including:
    • Recognition by the media as a candidate meriting media attention.
    • Evidence of a significant level of financial support and receipt of contributions from a significant number of contributors, as reflected in reports filed with the Secretary of State.
  • League may consider other factors that in the League’s good faith judgment may provide substantive evidence of voter interest in a candidate, such as a specified percentage (i.e., 10%-15%) of support as indicated in a nonpartisan voter poll.

The following additional criteria are being considered as well:

  • The League may consider other factors that in the League’s good faith judgment may provide substantive evidence of voter interest in a candidate, such as a specified percentage of support as indicated in a nonpartisan voter poll. (see above)
  • Evidence that a formal campaign is being waged with any of the following activities: e.g. presence of a headquarters, campaign staff issuance of position papers, campaign appearances, fundraising activities, etc.
  • Receipt of 5% of support in one or more current nonpartisan statewide public opinion polls. (for applicable candidate races)
  • The League of Women Voters will exercise its good faith judgment in determining candidate eligibility. It is the League’s intention to be inclusive rather than exclusive.

Based on the above criteria, a final determination of eligibility for participation will be made by the Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of Montezuma County
